1 Description of the main characters
-
Rachel Young: an
American of Chinese descent who lives with middle economic and raised by a single
mom, an economics professor.
-
Nick Young: A Singapore
rich family’s famous son who decided to be an unknown history professor in New

Astrid Leong: Nick’s
goddess cousin who has higher moneyed family thank Youngs.
-
Edison Cheng:
Nick’s stubborn cousin who think that rich family should be greedy and never be
humble.
2 What is the main problem and how it
can be solved
I think the main problem is how hard
to change rooted culture that can’t accepted other culture and social status.
The way Rachel acts and the way she
talks to Eleanor Young make everything melted and Eleanor becomes open minded.
4 The story lesson with attached story
details
-
To appreciate
others without comparing or judging who they really are. As:
“Just because some people actually work for
their money doesn’t mean they are beneath you.”
-
Great results came with hard work. As:
“Perfection comes at a sacrifice,”
-
Be brave if you are not wrong. As:
"I'm not leaving because I'm scared, or because I think
I'm not enough. Because maybe for the first time in my life, I know I am."
5 Story plot I want to change about
the story and why
I wish Youngs family got bankrupt so
they can understand and appreciate Rachel more.
6 Would I recommend the story to
someone? Why or why not?
Sure. I’ll recommend this to my friend
because she asked me before if I have a romantic novel recommendation.
7 What does the main character(s)
learn in the story?
-
Rachel and Nick: loving
means accepting and fight for them
-
Eleanor: as a
human we should appreciate others; loving doesn’t mean controlling
-
Edison: we’ll
never know how before we feel it; we should appreciate others.
10 Is the story written in “first
person” or “third person”? Provide evidence from the story to prove your
answer.
This story using third person point of
view of some main characters. For example:
At a neighboring table, the girl huddled behind a three-tiered stand piled high with finger sandwiches was getting increasingly excited by the conversation she was overhearing.
12. How is the main character in this
story similar and/or different to a character in another story you have read?
My latest reading journal: The Little
Match Girl by Hans Christian Andersen that has inspirational – kid story is really
different because they already have different genre and problems.
13 The story theme and similar title
of this them
This story theme is romance. Another example
of romance novel is To All Boys I’ve Loved Before (I haven’t read the novel but
watching the movie clips instead.
15 The Important of Setting
Setting is very important part of
story. If they didn’t go to Singapore, they might be enjoying their
relationship happily but without knowing Nick’s family.
